Daily Lowbrow Painting: Ha Ha on Wood

hahabobhorner

Ha Ha, approx 8" x 7", acrylic on 3/4" poplar wood slab, ready to hang

Hi. I've done at least 10 versions of this Ha Ha pattern over the last few years. It's a really simple idea but it's kind of deceptively simple because it's easy to make a bad one that doesn't work if you don't place the letters just right. And I've made some bad ones... Bold wallpaper comic book(ish) pattern. I'll sell this one for $50. If interested email me at bobhornerart (at)yahoo.com Thanks for looking!

Daily Lowbrow Painting: New Face on Wood

wface1pbobhorner

Face 1, 4" x 7", acrylic on 3/4" poplar wood slab, ready to hang

Hi. I liked the face art card I made yesterday so much I decided to make a larger one on wood. I love close-ups like this. Remember in the old Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns with Clint Eastwood. They would show an extreme close-up of the faces of the gunfighters staring each other down. They'd be squinting in the sun and sometimes there'd be a fly buzzing around their face. A painting like this doesn't really blend into the background, but I guess most of my paintings wouldn't. They're kinda loud. I could probably make a ton of these faces without getting tired of them. I'll list this on eBay this week. Thanks for looking!

Daily Painting: 3 ACEO's

Hi. I finished three new ACEO Art Cards. All three are mixed media, mostly watercolor. 3.5" x 2.5" on 100lb bristol board. Lowbrow illustrations. I like how these are turning out. Some of the details get so small I have to practically hold my breath while I paint them but they're fun to make. Thanks for looking!

I'm putting these on eBay tonight. Bid on my artwork here.

Daily Painting: Spaceman ACEO

wspacemanbobhorner

Spaceman, 2.5" x 3.5", watercolor on 100lb bristol paper

Hi. I decided to give some ACEO's a try (Art Cards, Editions, and Originals). They are small artworks, 2.5" x 3", the size of a baseball card. Because of their standard sizes they can be collected in plastic trading card pages. It's my first attempt. I made a simple spaceman with a moon in the background. It's pretty challenging to make a detailed painting in such a tiny space. I can see how it could get addictive though. I like the idea of tiny original handmade collectible objects of any kind. I'm going to start some more as soon as I post this. When I get a few I'll list them on eBay.

Daily Painting: The Cream of the Crap

wCreamCrapBobHorner

The Cream of the Crap, 11" x 10", acrylic on bristol board mounted on cradled wood panel. Ready to hang.

Hi. I missed a few days but this is a good one. Bold illustration style on a nice cradled wood panel that sits about 1-3/4" from the wall, gallery quality panel that doesn't need a frame. Totally lowbrow 60's alternative comix style. First time I ever painted a big pile of crap. Also includes a crappy snowman. I painted it on illustration bristol board and mounted it to the panel. Actual art is a tad brighter.

This painting is available for $100. I accept PayPal and U.S. money orders. Email me at bobhornerart(at)yahoo.com if interested. Thanks for looking!

Daily Painting: Teeth Heap (reworked)

webToothHeap2BobHorner

Teeth Heap, 8" x 10", acrylic on canvas

Hi. Yesterday's painting was bugging me so I reworked it some. I added more color to the background. I also "inked" the teeth a lot more, only with paint, not ink. A lot of times you get good ideas for a painting the next day. This doesn't really work that well when you're trying to finish a painting in one day though. I think the painting looks better today. Thanks for looking!

Small Sculpture: Bunny Suit

webBunnySuitBobHorner

Hi. This is a small sculpture I made. Today's my birthday and I made this to keep. I love to look at the custom versions people make of those vinyl art toys. Instead of repainting a toy, though I just sculpted my own. They all look kind of like the old Weebles anyway, pretty simple to make. I made the sculpture out of Sculpey and Super Sculpey over a foil armature with wire armatures in the ears and arms. It's painted with acrylics. I still need to varnish it. He's about 4 1/2" tall, a totally lowbrow art toy type sculpture. A goofy little guy to sit on a shelf.

Here's a Flickr photo set with tons of custom vinyl toy pictures. Dunny, Munny, DIY Qee, and any other designer vinyl toys you can find. Many of these are of toys that are 9" or taller, big enough to paint crazy detailing.

Daily Painting: Heads

webHeadsBobHorner

Heads, 8" x 10", acrylic on canvas panel

Hi. This is a pop art type wallpaper composition. Just some crazy heads put into a wallpaper like design. Bold, original painting. I like simple compositions like this. The heads were painted individually on watercolor paper and then glued onto a canvas panel. I also painted the canvas panel to make it a brighter white. The heads are painted in an outsider art type style. I'd love to see a whole wall plastered with a design like this. Or maybe some crazy wrapping paper. Thanks for looking.

Snowy Man, 5" x 7", acrylic on canvas panel

Hi. This is my first 5" x 7" painting, smallest so far on my blog. My first try so it's pretty simple. A nice snowman type guy for winter. I'm looking forward to making some smaller stuff like this. I'm also going to make some art cards. I'll list this on eBay Sunday night. Seventeen days straight with a new blog painting. A good start. Thanks for looking!

Daily Painting: On The Brain

OnTheBrainBobHorner

On The Brain, 8" x 10", acrylic on canvas panel

I'm really happy the way this one turned out. It wasn't looking so good but totally turned around and worked out in the end. Totally lowbrow illustration type pop surrealism. Looking at it now it reminds me of those old Garbage Pail Kids trading cards from the 80's. My brother and I had just about the whole set. I was originally just going to go with a white background but then tried the dark blue. So then it was too dark... so I added some stuff. I finally finished it though. Thanks for looking!

Daily Painting: Head To Head

HeadToHeadBobHorner

Head To Head, 8" x 10", acrylic and collage on canvas panel

Hi. This is a pretty simple composition but it worked out well. I like the big obvious forms in it. The bottom white guy is taken from an old painting that I use on the front page of my website. This one also has collage elements which are fully painted in acrylics. Thanks for looking!

Daily Painting: Springers

SpringersBobHorner

Springers, 8" x 10", acrylic and collaged drawing on canvas panel

Hi. This is a combination acrylic painting with collage. I started a painting on bristol board which included the white character at the bottom but the top turned out awful so I cut it up and started again. I added the 2 springheads which were cut out from old drawings. I also added some paint to the drawings. I put it all back together and glued it to a canvas panel. The background is painted directly on the panel. Almost all of it is painted except for the 2 springhead faces. I think it turned out well. It's looking 100% better than it looked last night when I was working on it. Thanks for looking.

A Painting A Day: More Grey Matter

Hi. Today I again took the idea from my last painting and did something new with it. This combines some of my favorite recurring elements. I used to paint all of these heaps of things. Now the heaps are turning into characters. I'm thinking of lots of directions to move these paintings forward an inch at a time, day by day. I like taking a simple form like the pink circle shapes and turning it into different forms in the same painting. It can turn into an eye or a mouth ar anything really. It comes from the way I draw, just drawing shapes and then turning them into things. The same as looking at clouds and seeing objects in them.

A Painting A Day: Grey Matter

Hi. I was pretty happy with the horn and small head from yesterday so I figured out a way to use them again. Not a typical solution but I like it when my paintings get a little crazy. I also like to take my different types of paintings and comibine them. This is similar to the Food Run painting from earlier this week. It will be nice to have this recorded blog to show how my paintings change from day to day, and the small progressions. The colors worked out well. I'll list it on eBay Sunday night.

A Painting A Day: Black Tooth and Old Shoe

Hi. This isn't a one day painting but today I finished a larger painting I've been working on for awhile. It was based on an old sketch. I was thinking of the Faustus legend when I drew it. Specifically of the Robert Johnson Crossroads legend of a bluesman selling his soul to play guitar. Lots of people paint the devil on a tree stump, probably because of that old Charlie Daniels song "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" and the "hickory stump" lyric. Maybe there's also a tree stump in the old folktales. This is about the goofiest devil you'll ever see though. He's in bad shape. The shoe is my old shoe. I'll show a close-up of it. This is probably my favorite painting that I've made. This pic is a little dark. I'll take a better one pretty soon. The left side has a faint shadow.

A Painting A Day: Look Away

Hi. Seven paintings in seven days. It's a habit now. This painting gave me fits. I'm still not sure what I think about it. It's more abstract which I like and more painterly which is what I was going for. It's more of a surrealistic style shoving different things into the composition. I've made a ton of similar abstract drawings like this but they turn out a lot different when painted. Adding color and brushstrokes changes the style a lot. The compositions become more rich and complex but it becomes more difficult to pull it off. Nothing ventured, nothing gained though. I'm trying to push my paintings forward. I'm going to list a couple paintings on eBay probably Thursday night.
